Basic research is an important part of the Department of Ophthalmology as an academic institution affiliated with the University of Bern. The strategic research priorities are thereby genetics, ocular immunology, retinal degeneration and regeneration, ocular inflammation and retinal vascular disease. In order to strengthen our scientific and methodological spectrum and to collaborate within the University of Bern our institution is active member of the Department of BioMedical Research (DBMR), the Cluster for Regenerative Neuroscience and the Platform for Stem Cell Research in Regenerative Medicine. There is also a strong commitment to innovation and translational research with multiple international academic and industrial partners. Furthermore, teaching activities include lectures, wet labs as well as supervision of MD, PhD and master theses of students from the University of Bern.
